This is the best way to work with the atmega328p-pu chip directly, without needing a breadboard and a bunch of wires. In the Boards Manager in the Arduino IDE, download the MiniCore boards. This will allow you to select the atmega328 chip and various options for the chip, like clock speed and whether you intend to use the chip with an external crystal or just the internal oscillator.
