Q: what is the advantage of this device in comparison with external hard drives which use SATA SSD?

Kravex It holds a different type of SSD, the M.2 hard drive is used in thinner laptops and devices. I use this for checking that the device works and for transferring data from faulty laptops, M.2 drives are more expensive so other than it being a little smaller there's no real other advantages.
